For years, the Durham Academy magazine functioned as a dense, text-heavy archive rather than a dynamic engagement tool. It relied on recycled newsletter content and institutional reporting, which created a barrier for our most important audiences—alumni and donors. The publication had become a 'checkbox' item that lacked the visual hierarchy and emotional pacing required to compete in a modern media landscape. My challenge was to dismantle this legacy 'newsletter' approach and architect a sophisticated editorial strategy that could turn a mandatory read into a meaningful experience.

I spearheaded a complete reimagining of the magazine’s editorial and visual DNA. This wasn't just a redesign; it was an editorial intervention. I collaborated with the content team to pivot away from reporting and toward human-centered storytelling, directing the shift toward diverse formats like stat-driven visuals, first-person narratives, and immersive long-form features. By serving as the bridge between photography, writing, and design, I curated a story flow that prioritized pacing and 'engagement beats.' I specifically advocated for integrating alumni content throughout the entire publication—rather than isolating it—to reinforce the narrative that our alumni remain the heartbeat of the institutional story.

The 2025 edition successfully redefined the magazine’s purpose, closing the emotional gap between the school and its global community. This strategic shift earned national validation with a Bronze in the 2025 InspirED Brilliance Awards for Magazine Writing, proving that the narrative transformation was as powerful as the visual one. Readers reported feeling 'pulled in' and more deeply connected to the content than ever before. We transformed a static publication into a high-value brand asset that now serves as a primary vehicle for alumni re-engagement and donor cultivation.
