Durham Academy had a major 'perception gap'. For nearly 30 years, the institution's visual identity stayed exactly the same while the school, its curriculum, community, and mission moved miles ahead. By 2025, that 1998 look wasn't just old; it was a strategic drag on a 90-year-old institution that prides itself on inclusion and future-focused innovation. My challenge was to lead the charge in fixing that disconnect without losing the 'sacred' parts of DA's history that people still loved. I had to navigate some intense feedback loops with stakeholders who were deeply attached to the status quo, all while figuring out how to turn a high-level agency concept into a living, breathing brand system that felt like the real DA.
Turning those high-level agency concepts into a living brand was where the heavy lifting began. As the primary creative lead and sole executor of the rollout, I constructed a centralized production pipeline to manage an intensive, eight-week sprint. I personally directed and delivered over 80 unique brand assets—from large-scale environmental signage and mascot personification to digital templates and philanthropic appeals. Beyond the execution, I served as a strategic advisor to internal teams, providing the creative governance and application guidance needed to ensure every department could successfully adopt the new identity. This wasn't just about high-volume design; it was about engineering a scalable visual ecosystem that allowed a 90-year-old institution to transition its identity in record time without a single break in operational continuity.
The rebrand’s successful launch marked a definitive turning point for Durham Academy, closing the perception gap and modernizing our visual authority overnight. The impact was immediate and measurable: by Homecoming, school store sales had already surpassed previous year-to-date benchmarks, proving a rapid and enthusiastic community adoption of the new identity. This success was validated on a national scale when the rollout was awarded Gold in the 2025 InspirED Brilliance Awards for Special Events.
Beyond the initial excitement, the true value of this project lies in its longevity. We delivered a unified, flexible visual system that does more than just look modern—it proactively addresses institutional needs and communication challenges we hadn’t even identified at the start of the process. By providing a scalable foundation for every division and department, I ensured that Durham Academy is now visually equipped to tell its story with clarity and purpose for the next generation of Cavaliers.
